Project Wawa Illari, Pachacámac, Lima

Lima, Peru · Operator: International Child Development Program (ICDP) ペルー、パチャカマック保健センター(保健省)、マギル大学ほかの共同事業。地域保健推進員(CHP)が現場の担い手。

Overview

A multi-sectoral project in the rocky peripheral settlements of the Pachacámac district south of metropolitan Lima, Peru, targeting households with children aged 0–3. Community health promoters delivered home and community gardening, nutrition and parenting workshops in sequence, aiming to improve early child development and household food security. The design uses gardens as an entry point to nutrition and parenting rather than as a stand-alone activity.

Citizen participation

Community health promoters (CHPs) delivered a 'step-by-step' learning sequence to residents: (1) home and community gardens, (2) 'conscious nutrition', and (3) parenting workshops following the International Child Development Program method. The settlements were identified as the neediest in the area by nurses at the Pachacámac public health centre. The evaluation covered 113 intervention and 127 control children aged 0–3.

Operating model

A time-limited, grant-funded project. The main funder was Grand Challenges Canada's Saving Brains programme (grant #R-SB-POC-1707-09076), complemented by donations via Susila Dharma International and its national organisations and the Aspen Community Foundation (US). It ran on external funding rather than on contributions from participating households.

Impact

Over 12 months the interventions significantly reduced the risk of food insecurity (risk ratio 0.20, 95% CI 0.08–0.51) and of language delay (0.39, 0.19–0.82), and lowered diarrhoea and respiratory infections. Motor and social/cognitive delay did not improve significantly; the authors suggest a longer intervention might have detected further gains and that control of infections and of pets may be needed. Because gardens were bundled with nutrition and parenting components, the gardens' own contribution cannot be isolated. It was a grant-limited project and whether activity continued after the funding period could not be confirmed from published sources.
