This profile article introduces Sun Lixiang, director and Communist Party branch secretary of the Hangzhou Seed General Station in China, described as a senior extension researcher. This South Korean study examines the status of farming activities carried out by farmers in urban and peri-urban regions in order to assess the prospects for urban agriculture's continuation, noting that despite its multifunctional role, urban farming faces difficulties including conflicts with urban residents and concerns over the safety of produce, irrigation water and agricultural labor amid urbanization; the paper aims to provide baseline data for discussing the future relationship between urban regions and agriculture.

Hongshan caitai (also called purple caitai), a local specialty of Wuhan, China, is regarded alongside Wuchang fish as one of the two great dishes of Chutian (2007). Following direction from the Wuhan municipal government, the Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Agriculture decided in 2005 to spend about three years organizing personnel from multiple fields to jointly develop six major vegetable varieties, including Hongshan caitai, according to industrialization requirements, with the aim of forming distinct regional industry characteristics. Based on years of production practice, the Hongshan Caitai Industrialization Technical Guidance Group compiled key cultivation techniques for growers' reference.

It discussed countermeasures and approaches for promoting the protection of urban agriculture based on sustainable development principles. The study also proposed strategies for advancing agricultural and rural economic structures, developing high-quality agriculture, and improving agricultural product quality and competitiveness.

This study investigated urban farming in six Indonesian cities (Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Cirebon, Salatiga, and Pacitan). The 1997 economic crisis demonstrated that urban food security is not always guaranteed, with urban poor spending over 50% of their income on food. Research findings indicated that urban farming helped the urban poor increase food security, raise income, and create job opportunities. However, urban farming activities face many problems, including access to finance, skills and knowledge, lack of government support, and no associations for urban farmers.

This paper addresses three agricultural problems in China: slow agricultural growth, lagging rural development, and low peasant income. These issues, stemming from urban-rural disparities and financial deviations from the planned economy era, are analyzed with urban agriculture presented as an effective solution. The paper discusses the importance, basic concepts, and characteristics of urban agriculture, summarizes its role and development model in the Yangling agricultural high technology and production model area, and proposes sustainable development countermeasures based on advanced experiences from China and abroad.

Using Nanjing's urban agriculture as a case, this article positions urban agriculture as one effective approach to resolving China's "three rural" (agriculture, rural areas, farmers) issues. After noting problems in its development, it proposes strengthening market-development capacity oriented to urban dynamic demand so that supply creates markets, cultivating pillar industries and enterprises responsive to domestic and international demand, building management organizations to lower market operating costs, channeling market capital to keep optimizing the agricultural industrial structure, and using institutional construction and innovation to sustain urban agriculture's development.

This study in peri-urban Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, examined the income and cropping systems of small vegetable farms (average 0.8 ha, 60% dedicated to vegetables). Vegetables yielded about $1000 in total revenues or $650 added value per farm annually, with added value per hectare per day being double or more than that for rice. Constraints included labor limitations (especially for irrigation), high input costs for organic materials, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides, as well as pests, low and variable vegetable prices, and an apparent overuse of chemical fertilizers and insecticides.

This study focuses on the diversity and complexity of agricultural production organization in urban landscapes of nonindustrial societies, specifically analyzing the role of reservoirs in the agricultural landscape around Vijayanagara, southern India. Vijayanagara's agricultural facilities and strategies were diverse in both form and scale, ranging from vast canal irrigation to small rain-fed plots. Reservoirs, as a single morphological type, crosscut traditional agricultural categories, indicating significant variability in productive organization and suggesting that ecological and organizational contexts, beyond facility typology, are crucial for understanding production.
