Political Ecology of Urban Agricultural Pollution

This paper investigates the toxicity in river water in the Yamuna khadar floodplains in Delhi, India, caused by pesticides and fertilizers used in agriculture. The study examines how this toxicity is perceived, discursively constructed, and dealt with by differently located stakeholders. It finds that stakeholders in the Yamuna khadar do not experience pollution as a homogeneous community, nor do they all perceive themselves as suffering from or contributing to the toxicity in a similar way.

This study investigated the wood types serving as substrates, ethnomycology, mineral composition, proximate, and phytochemical compounds of the wild macro fungus Schizophyllum commune Fr. in the area along the Palu-Koro fault, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, using a descriptive explanatory approach. Fungi and wood substrate samples were collected through purposive sampling in forest areas, agroforestry, and community gardens. The results identified 92 types of rotted wood, belonging to 36 families, where S. commune grew. Nutritional content was found to be good, although it varied based on the type of wood growing media.

This qualitative study explored the economic and environmental aspects of urban farming activities among 12 farmers in Kelompok Tani Taruna Tani Muara Hurip, Tasikmalaya City, Indonesia. The findings indicate that urban farming activities have not significantly contributed to the income of farmers or landowners, based on the investment ratio. However, environmentally, most farmers practice eco-friendly farming using organic fertilizers.

This service program aimed to optimize the urban farming area in Genitri Village, Pisang Candi Subdistrict, Malang City, to produce processed agricultural products with high marketability. Partners faced issues with unavailable facilities and infrastructure for urban farming. The service team implemented a program including adding plant varieties, building irrigation and sanitation channels, constructing public bathrooms, producing processed agricultural products, and marketing. Results showed that optimizing facilities and infrastructure eased cultivation for residents, leading to high-value processed products and improved local economies as MSMEs.

This study descriptively investigates the issue of agricultural land degradation in Kembangan District, West Jakarta, Indonesia. It notes that the conversion of agricultural land due to urban development can lead to the loss of regional food security and identity. The research concludes that vertical urban agriculture, adapted with architectural engineering technology, is one way to develop the agricultural industry to maintain food security amidst the land crisis.

This study investigated the institutional aspects of subak agricultural sustainability in Denpasar City, Bali, using a literature review method. It found that institutional factors are crucial for preserving subak's viability and fostering subak farming in urban settings. Social capital was identified as the factor contributing most to the sustainability of urban farming in Denpasar City, fostering high community involvement in conjunction with Tri Hita Karana.

In Jatinegara Baru Housing, East Jakarta, Indonesia, an urban farming program was conducted from March to December 2022 for residents and santri of the Al Jabar community. The program included cultivating vegetables in narrow yards, utilizing green spaces, and training in compost and POC production. Evaluation showed that participant understanding increased from an initial 10% to 100%, the activity was rated "very beneficial," and the combined theory and practice method was considered highly suitable for participants.

A study assessing the implementation of the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) in schools in Lila District, Bohol, Philippines, revealed that the overall program implementation was less implemented. While roles and responsibilities at the school level and the establishment and maintenance of school gardens were implemented to a moderate extent, capability building, program monitoring, sustainability mechanisms, and program evaluation were less implemented. Respondents generally perceived the program as moderately beneficial and reported that implementation-related problems were less serious.

Integrating GIS, biogeochemical and solar simulation to quantify how much food and energy urban rooftop agrivoltaics (lettuce grown under PV panels) can produce. For Shenzhen's 854,000 rooftops (~105 km²) it estimates ~0.98 Mt/year of lettuce (meeting the whole city's demand) and ~2,106 MW of PV generating ~1,899 GWh/year, while flagging ~4.11 Mt/year of extra irrigation water as a key water trade-off.

It supports embedding gardening in elderly welfare and dementia-care programmes.

This research analyzed landscape transformations, specifically agricultural landscape structures and functions, in eight selected sites in the urban fringe of Bangkok from 1952 to 2018. The study found that the significant loss of agricultural landscape in Bangkok's peri-urban areas resulted in the loss of seasonal water retention areas, productive landscapes, and urban wildlife habitats. It concludes there is a research gap regarding the lack of policies and practices to promote ecosystem services linked to preserving peri-urban agriculture in Bangkok.

This study investigated heavy metal contamination in urban agricultural soils near railway tracks and an industrial complex in Jinju, South Korea, to ensure food safety. While the average heavy metal values did not exceed soil contamination guidelines, some individual soil samples showed concentrations higher than the guidelines. Furthermore, the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) indicated that several soils were contaminated compared to background levels, with Cu, Pb, Zn, and Sb showing the highest contamination. Long-term monitoring of urban vegetable garden soils is recommended.
