This study aimed to identify the social and economic effects of community gardens by analyzing detailed cases in the U.S. based on social capital theory. In the U.S., community gardens are utilized for plant cultivation and horticulture, as well as complex activities like education, play, leisure, and rest, creating sustainable community values. While Korean community gardens often operate as urban farms or parks, the study suggests that managing them with spatial characteristics and programs that foster communities by gathering residents is desirable for community contribution and sustainability.

The research involved interviews with urban agriculture site operators and participants from June to July 2011, and a survey of 153 general citizens who participated in a pocket garden event on September 3, 2011. The survey covered urban agriculture awareness, participation status, attitudes towards eco-friendly agriculture, produce safety, and activation measures.

This study evaluated citizens' willingness-to-pay for the maintenance fund of urban agriculture's multi-functions in South Korea. The analysis categorized respondents into vegetable garden users, general consumers, and all respondents. The estimated values for multi-functionality were KRW 20,367 per household for general consumers, KRW 22,174 for urban agriculture users, and KRW 21,467 for all respondents.

International experience indicates that the development of ecological urban agriculture is inseparable from the rise of a middle-income group, characterized by taking responsibility for social stability, holding non-extreme policy positions, and — in consumption — emphasizing environmental protection and advocating green consumption. The paper argues that urban agriculture must foreground an ecological theme to attract this middle-income consumer group, gain support from a consumer base of sufficient scale, and allow the multifunctionality of ecological urban agriculture to be realized and exercised.

This 2011 article profiles a rural credit cooperative in Fucheng District, Mianyang, Sichuan Province, China, located at the urban-rural fringe in an area experiencing rapid urban-rural integration. Amid the Chinese Communist Party central government's Document No. 1 policy focus on rural issues, and as three rural issues (agriculture, rural areas and farmers) and agricultural industrialization advanced, central and regulatory bodies adjusted requirements and policies for financial institutions supporting these areas. The Fucheng District Rural Credit Cooperative, following the principle of supporting local economic development and aligning with local agricultural industrialization projects and structural adjustment plans, seized these policy opportunities and served as a leading force in agricultural support, achieving three shifts — including a shift from supporting rural village agriculture toward supporting urban, suburban and export-oriented agriculture.

A correlational survey of farmers' attitudes toward participating in community-supported agriculture (CSA) in the Markazi district of Karaj, Iran. Out of a population of 1,598 farmers, a sample of 130 was drawn by simple random sampling (initially 117 via Cochran's formula, later expanded), using a questionnaire validated by expert judgment and showing Cronbach's alpha reliability of 0.7–0.9. Farmers' main motivation for CSA participation was securing financial resources and marketing their produce. Interest in receiving citizens' financial support correlated significantly and positively with annual income, family labor use, and number of citizen visits to farms (p<0.01), and with dependency on the residential area and education level (p<0.05). A Kruskal-Wallis test found significant differences among farmers from different residential areas in interest in citizen financial support, willingness to cooperate with citizens across income levels, satisfaction with farming income, and length of cultivation (p<0.05).

This article analyzed the comparative advantages of agricultural sub-sectors in Taiyuan City, China, using the location quotient and revealed symmetric comparative advantage (RSCA) methods, based on the theory of comparative advantage. The results showed that Jiancaoping, Qingxu, and Xiaodian districts are superior in characterized agriculture; Yingze, Xinghualing, and Loufan counties in forestry; and Jinyuan, Yingze, and Loutan counties in fishery. Consequently, the industrial development of urban agriculture in Taiyuan can be categorized into four cycles: sightseeing and leisure, characterized, sci-tech demonstration, and cooperative agriculture.
