Integrating vertical farming with vertical housing in hot-arid contexts: a socio-spatial, technical, and VR-based design strategy in the UAE

This study investigated integrating vertical farming into Emirati vertical public housing in Sharjah, UAE, to reinterpret traditional outdoor living spaces. Researchers developed three vertical farming scenarios and evaluated them with 30 Emirati prospective users (aged 20–23) via immersive virtual reality and semi-structured interviews. Findings indicated that user acceptance was influenced by socio-spatial, cultural, and practical factors, with the Mixed Vertical Farming scenario receiving the strongest support.

This study examined environmental, technological, and socio-economic determinants influencing the ecological viability of AI integration in Kinshasa's peri-urban agriculture, which faces threats like soil degradation and inadequate infrastructure. A field survey of 411 farmers in the Kimwenza area found 86.13% viewed AI positively despite major structural constraints, including lack of electricity (78.83%) and digital illiteracy (54.99%). The study highlights the current lack of anticipatory public policies to address these constraints for a sustainable digital transformation.

Peri-urban agriculture in the Democratic Republic of Congo heavily relies on natural rainfall, leading to yield decreases of up to 50% and a lengthening of the crop cycle from 21 to 45 days during the dry season. This study proposes the design and implementation of an autonomous IoT-based irrigation system to optimize water use at Green Village, Kinshasa. The proposed solution aims to enable real-time adaptive irrigation, reducing water loss and stabilizing production.

This study empirically demonstrated an integrative model combining low-cost bottle aquaponics, experiential learning, and educational tourism (eduwisata) as a community-based diffusion platform. Findings revealed that simple, highly replicable systems significantly enhanced food literacy, technical capability, and adoption intention, while eduwisata accelerated diffusion beyond initial participants.

This qualitative study in Navotas City explored the economic viability and marketability of aeroponics systems in urban agriculture. Findings indicate aeroponics requires high initial investment and faces challenges such as produce failing to meet specific weight standards for sale, high energy consumption, and high setup costs. While offering benefits like efficient resource use and high yields, further improvements in system efficiency and operational methods are needed for it to become a viable and scalable business model.

An experimental study in the Zamboanga Peninsula investigated the economic feasibility of hydroponic lettuce production using Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ). Estrosa and Olmetie lettuce varieties showed optimal performance, with undetectable nitrate levels in Estrosa and Green Wave, and all varieties remaining within international safety limits for nitrate. Cadmium was not detected.

This study presents Easy Grow Plants, an integrated web and Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem designed for urban plant care, addressing issues like inconsistent watering and insufficient care knowledge. The prototype, implemented with a React frontend, Django REST backend, SQLite database, and an Arduino UNO R4 WiFi smart pot, connects plant care guidance, soil-moisture monitoring, automated watering, and plant recommendations. Functional, interface, API, IoT connectivity, sensor calibration, watering control, and LAN deployment tests confirmed that the core modules operated together as an integrated academic prototype, providing a practical foundation for smart urban gardening.

This project aimed to extract vacant spaces and rooftops suitable for urban agriculture using geospatial technologies. For vacant space extraction, three classifiers were tested, with the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier achieving the highest accuracy at 75% precision. For rooftop extraction, object-based classification using SVM, the Footprint Building Extraction-USA deep learning model, and Mapflow's building model were tested, with the latter two achieving F-Factor values above 77%.

This study developed an IoT-based smart irrigation system to optimize water management in urban and domestic agriculture. A quantitative field survey of 87 respondents revealed that 52.9% cited lack of time as the main obstacle to maintaining residential cultivation. A low-cost functional prototype using an Arduino Nano microcontroller was developed, and its Proof of Concept demonstrated the technical feasibility and stability of the local closed-loop firmware, ensuring automated activation based on critical thresholds.

This study introduces the Smart Bagging System (SBS) for fertilizer packaging, integrating IoT, sensors, and Random Forest Regressor algorithms. SBS reduced the defect rate from 68.15% to 2.37% and enabled the production of small 5 kg packages with a higher margin of IDR 5,038/kg compared to 50 kg packages at IDR 1,939/kg, creating new market opportunities including urban farming.

This review assessed the importance of vegetables in Home Food Gardening (HFG) in modern cities. Vegetables constitute a major part of HFG due to their rapid production, ease of maintenance, high yield in small spaces, and high nutritional benefits. Common HFG practices include yard, rooftop, balcony, community, and street/plot gardens, with innovations like better crop varieties and hydroponics increasing productivity. However, issues such as space constraints, expensive setup costs, lack of knowledge, poor soil, and insufficient light persist.

This qualitative study explored facilitators and barriers to implementing an electronic redemption system in a Healthy Food Incentive (HFI) program among farmers' markets, farm stands, and community-supported agriculture. Semi-structured interviews with HFI staff identified six facilitators and ten barriers, including a cumbersome registration process, technological difficulties, the risk of losing customers, and insufficient capacity. The evaluation highlighted the necessity of localizing technology dissemination.

A study conducted from December 2019 to April 2020 at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, evaluated organic manure-based substrates in geotextile vertical farming for mint, chili, and Indian spinach. The substrate combining vermicompost, coco fibre, and soil consistently enhanced the growth and yield of all three crops, producing the highest yields per plant compared to other treatments.

This paper presents an open-source automation framework for urban polyhouse hydroponic farming, costing under $100, featuring multi-parameter sensing and a dual-loop control strategy. Three replicated 42-day trials with Coriandrum sativum using nutrient film technique (NFT) showed a 27.5% ± 3.2% increase in fresh weight and 82% water savings compared to manual control (p < 0.05). Economic analysis indicated a 6.1-month break-even and 96% ROI in the first year.

This project focused on designing a robotic arm for precision agriculture, aiming for young trainees to interact with research processes through prototyping applied to urban agriculture. Using a mixed methodology and educational approach, researchers, professors, and students engaged with processes for natural fertilizer production, soil preparation, biocontrols, and the design and development of technologies useful for urban agriculture. This initiative contributed to didactics related to prototyping, fostered an ethics of care for plants, food, and nature, and helped students recognize agriculture's link to technology and precision agriculture principles.

This systematic review, analyzing 25 articles from an initial 166 Scopus records, maps how innovation, technology adoption, and Islamic entrepreneurial behaviors intertwine and contribute to the SDGs. Findings show five complementary faces of innovation: process-organization, sharia business/finance models, financial and platform digitalization, technological innovation in business models (e.g., urban farming–aquaponics), and halal product/marketing innovation, driven by individual values, Islamic HRM, finance architecture, and digital literacy. The impact is multidimensional performance, access to ethical capital, halal market behavior, and social and religious environmental outcomes, with strong contributions to SDG 8 and SDG 9.

This paper proposes an Android application integrating plant disease detection and waste management for urban agriculture. The system uses a lightweight TensorFlow Lite CNN model to detect plant diseases from leaf images in real time and provides treatment recommendations. It also includes a module for users to submit waste complaints with images, descriptions, and GPS information, allowing administrators to monitor and update statuses via the cloud.
