A community service program in Semanan Urban Village, DKI Jakarta, aimed to enhance residents' capacity for AI-based urban farming to strengthen food security, digital literacy, and community empowerment. Activities included socialization, training, technology implementation, mentoring, and evaluation. The program successfully improved community knowledge and technical skills in urban agriculture through AI technologies like soil sensors and automated irrigation, increased digital literacy, and strengthened program sustainability through continuous mentoring and community building.

This study proposed and validated a virtual sensor-driven digital twin system for monitoring plant growth on rooftop farms, using a rooftop tomato case in Xiamen, China. The system integrates environmental data acquisition, LSTM–DSSAT model prediction, database storage, and 3D visualization. The coupled Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) weather prediction model and Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) crop growth model achieved high predictive accuracy for leaf area index (R2=0.9814) and aboveground biomass (R2=0.9966), supporting 7-day forecasts for phenology and yield.

This study investigated integrating vertical farming into Emirati vertical public housing in Sharjah, UAE, to reinterpret traditional outdoor living spaces. Researchers developed three vertical farming scenarios and evaluated them with 30 Emirati prospective users (aged 20–23) via immersive virtual reality and semi-structured interviews. Findings indicated that user acceptance was influenced by socio-spatial, cultural, and practical factors, with the Mixed Vertical Farming scenario receiving the strongest support.

This study aimed to empower the community of Kalisegoro Village by integrating digital technology into urban agricultural innovation. Through socialization, digital literacy training, and Canva-based packaging design workshops involving 14 students and 50 residents, the program significantly improved technical cultivation skills and visual branding abilities. The use of Canva enhanced access to professional design, increasing the competitiveness and sales value of local products.

This study examined environmental, technological, and socio-economic determinants influencing the ecological viability of AI integration in Kinshasa's peri-urban agriculture, which faces threats like soil degradation and inadequate infrastructure. A field survey of 411 farmers in the Kimwenza area found 86.13% viewed AI positively despite major structural constraints, including lack of electricity (78.83%) and digital illiteracy (54.99%). The study highlights the current lack of anticipatory public policies to address these constraints for a sustainable digital transformation.

Peri-urban agriculture in the Democratic Republic of Congo heavily relies on natural rainfall, leading to yield decreases of up to 50% and a lengthening of the crop cycle from 21 to 45 days during the dry season. This study proposes the design and implementation of an autonomous IoT-based irrigation system to optimize water use at Green Village, Kinshasa. The proposed solution aims to enable real-time adaptive irrigation, reducing water loss and stabilizing production.

This study empirically demonstrated an integrative model combining low-cost bottle aquaponics, experiential learning, and educational tourism (eduwisata) as a community-based diffusion platform. Findings revealed that simple, highly replicable systems significantly enhanced food literacy, technical capability, and adoption intention, while eduwisata accelerated diffusion beyond initial participants.

This qualitative study in Navotas City explored the economic viability and marketability of aeroponics systems in urban agriculture. Findings indicate aeroponics requires high initial investment and faces challenges such as produce failing to meet specific weight standards for sale, high energy consumption, and high setup costs. While offering benefits like efficient resource use and high yields, further improvements in system efficiency and operational methods are needed for it to become a viable and scalable business model.

This study analyzes protected cultivation and hydroponics in Brazil as technologies enabling full control of environmental variables and eliminating dependence on climate seasonality. These technologies demonstrate 80-95% reductions in water consumption, 300-500% increases in productivity compared to open fields, and complete elimination of agrochemical residues. However, the study also points out implementation challenges for these technologies, concluding they are fundamental for food security in contexts of accelerated urbanization, water scarcity, and global climate change.

An experimental study in the Zamboanga Peninsula investigated the economic feasibility of hydroponic lettuce production using Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ). Estrosa and Olmetie lettuce varieties showed optimal performance, with undetectable nitrate levels in Estrosa and Green Wave, and all varieties remaining within international safety limits for nitrate. Cadmium was not detected.

This study presents Easy Grow Plants, an integrated web and Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem designed for urban plant care, addressing issues like inconsistent watering and insufficient care knowledge. The prototype, implemented with a React frontend, Django REST backend, SQLite database, and an Arduino UNO R4 WiFi smart pot, connects plant care guidance, soil-moisture monitoring, automated watering, and plant recommendations. Functional, interface, API, IoT connectivity, sensor calibration, watering control, and LAN deployment tests confirmed that the core modules operated together as an integrated academic prototype, providing a practical foundation for smart urban gardening.

A community service program in Berkah Family Village Housing, Kubang Jaya Village, Indonesia, used a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach to enhance urban household food self-sufficiency. The program provided training in vertical hydroponics, organic waste processing, and e-commerce, increasing participants' knowledge and skills in these areas significantly. A single hydroponic tower yielded 7.2–14 kg per cycle with substantial income potential, and 20 households learned to process kitchen waste into liquid fertilizer.

This project aimed to extract vacant spaces and rooftops suitable for urban agriculture using geospatial technologies. For vacant space extraction, three classifiers were tested, with the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier achieving the highest accuracy at 75% precision. For rooftop extraction, object-based classification using SVM, the Footprint Building Extraction-USA deep learning model, and Mapflow's building model were tested, with the latter two achieving F-Factor values above 77%.

This study conducted a global review of vertical farming technologies and sustainability. Vertical farming shows significant savings in land and water consumption compared to traditional agriculture, yielding high production and quality for leafy greens, herbs, and some fruiting species. However, high energy demand remains a significant barrier to its sustainability and economic feasibility. Key research gaps include crop improvement for controlled settings, energy-efficient system design, renewable energy integration, and standardized frameworks for sustainability evaluation.

This study assessed urban agriculture (UA) in Jos Metropolis, Nigeria, using geospatial mapping, surveys, and yield trials. Greenhouses accounted for 76% of UA, with vegetables dominating production at 72%. Yield trials showed hydroponics increased bell pepper yield by 4.3 times and sack farming increased yam yield by 3.1 times compared to open-field cultivation. A micro-economic analysis indicated hydroponics and sack farming were financially viable, but open-field yam farming had a negative Net Present Value (NPV) of −₦101,594, confirming its financial non-viability in urban contexts.

This conceptual research explores the role of farmer-to-consumer (F2C) know-how exchange via SNSs in enhancing urban consumers' loyalty to Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) organic farms. Utilizing the MOA theoretical framework, the study identifies key drivers of F2C know-how exchanges and their impacts on consumer loyalty intentions. It suggests that leveraging social capital and mutual trust through SNS-based knowledge exchange can contribute to more resilient and sustainable local organic agriculture.

This study investigated the digitalization readiness of urban horticultural farmers in Surakarta, Indonesia, using Interpretive Structural Modeling and MICMAC analysis with data from 20 key informants. Five principal factors were identified: agricultural technology availability, digital literacy, training and capacity building, institutional support, and government involvement, with government involvement being the dominant driving force. The study proposes four strategic interventions to support digital transformation.

This community service program at Kebun Saung Asri 2 in North Jakarta transformed an unproductive space into a productive green area through citizen initiative. Activities included socialization, training, technology implementation (hydroponics, drip irrigation, composters, QRIS), and mentoring. The program resulted in increased harvest productivity, diversification of processed products, strengthened community institutions, active community participation, and the creation of an educational and social green space.

This study developed an IoT-based smart irrigation system to optimize water management in urban and domestic agriculture. A quantitative field survey of 87 respondents revealed that 52.9% cited lack of time as the main obstacle to maintaining residential cultivation. A low-cost functional prototype using an Arduino Nano microcontroller was developed, and its Proof of Concept demonstrated the technical feasibility and stability of the local closed-loop firmware, ensuring automated activation based on critical thresholds.

Research showed a strong concentration in Asia-Pacific countries and rapid expansion after 2022. Studies were classified into open (15%), building-integrated (30%), and fully controlled indoor systems (55%), with the latter focusing on high-technology. Temperature-focused studies remain limited, revealing gaps in empirical validation and multi-scale integration.
