Overview
The flagship example of the R-Urban strategy, turning vacant suburban land near Paris into citizen-run agro-cultural hubs. AgroCité, combining urban agriculture, recycling and low-energy building, was born in Colombes, dismantled in 2017 to make way for a car park, and rebuilt in Gennevilliers after a residents' campaign. It is internationally known as a model of the urban commons.
Citizen participation
The flagship unit of R-Urban, the urban-resilience strategy launched in 2011 by the architecture collective AAA. Residents cultivate community-garden plots and co-manage a micro-farm, café, composting, rainwater harvesting and compost-heat experiments. After eviction from Colombes, it was rebuilt with residents in Gennevilliers and relaunched as a citizen-run commons.
Operating model
Run as a non-profit commons, supported by EU Life-programme and other grants, agreements with municipalities, member fees and volunteer labour, supplemented by income from the café and market stalls.
Impact
Referenced worldwide as a pioneering case of urban commons and citizen-led resilience, it has won European awards and seeded further EU projects. Its eviction and rebuilding are studied as evidence of both the fragility of interim land use and the negotiating power of citizens.
Land tenure
Interim use of municipal land under agreement. A policy change in Colombes forced the project out in 2017; it was relocated with the support of the city of Gennevilliers.
