Azabudai Hills Central Plaza Orchard, Edible Garden & Urban Beekeeping

Minato, Tokyo, Japan · Operator: 森ビル株式会社(Mori Building)

Overview

An orchard, edible garden and urban beekeeping programme within the large green spaces of Azabudai Hills (opened 2023). An ~200 sqm orchard grows 11 fruit species plus herbs and edible plants; children's honey harvests and greening workshops connect residents, workers and citizens to food and farming in the city centre.

Citizen participation

At the central-plaza orchard and edible garden, residents, workers and citizens join greening workshops growing edible plants and herbs. Linked urban beekeeping (with Ark Hills) lets children harvest honey and plant bee-friendly flowers, producing 'Hills-born' honey. The site also hosts the public-private 'Tokyo Green Biz Day'.

Operating model

Run by Mori Building as part of a green-and-wellness town-making strategy centred on greenery and food; orchard/herb harvests and events are open to residents, workers and citizens.

Impact

Embeds food, farming and biodiversity into a flagship central-Tokyo development, expanding citizen engagement with greenery through public-private events as a new 'garden city' model.
