Overview
A Fukuoka (Hakata) based NPO devoted to urban beekeeping and public outreach about honeybees. Under the motto that a town where bees fly is a good town, it keeps bees on building rooftops and other sites, drawing attention to the city's vanishing nature and linking people with nature and their community.
Citizen participation
Carries out community exchange and environmental awareness through urban beekeeping and supports inquiry-based learning about bees in primary and junior-high schools. It partners with Fukuoka City and Dazaifu City on beekeeping social experiments at historic sites and bee-utilization matching programs.
Operating model
NPO-run. Supported by sales of harvested honey, partnership projects with companies and local governments, and environmental education programs.
Impact
Manages around 23 bee colonies across the Fukuoka region and, by linking with school education and municipal policy, has raised citizen interest in biodiversity and awareness of urban greening.

Umeda Honeybee Project
