Baštalište — Belgrade's first organised garden community (Slanci)

Belgrade (Slanci), Serbia · Operator: Baštalište(2つの市民団体が立ち上げたガーデンコミュニティ)

Overview

Belgrade's first formally organised garden community. Founded by two NGOs, it divides a private plot in the village of Slanci — about 9 km from the city centre — into individual allotments farmed on organic principles. Belgrade already had well over 100 hectares of informal gardens, some occupying other people's land for 30 years or more (one estimate puts allotment use at about 125 ha in 2012); Baštalište was the first attempt to replace that with an open call, allocated plots and shared rules. Sources date its founding to either 2012 or 2013.

Citizen participation

A public call for members opens at the start of each season and each applicant is allocated a plot; demand exceeds supply so a waiting list is kept. Members get tools, water, an irrigation system and a selection of seeds and seedlings alongside their plot. Members are mostly employed people in their 30s–50s, and surveys report health and socialising as the main motivations — economic gain is rarely mentioned.

Operating model

Membership-based. It runs on rented private land rather than city land, so it does not depend on municipal support; produce is grown for members' own consumption rather than for sale.

Impact

A worked example of moving informal urban gardening onto an organised footing without evicting anyone. Member surveys put health and socialising above income as reasons to join, suggesting that in post-socialist cities the role of shared gardens is shifting from subsistence to social connection. Because it sits on rented private rather than public land, though, its tenure is less secure than gardens backed by a municipal scheme.
