Overview
A park for beekeeping in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. The first park opened in 1936 along Sloterweg in the Riekerpolder, and a newer one followed in 1965 on Osdorperweg in the De Eendracht polder. The grounds combine ornamental gardens with beekeepers' gardens, and include a small beekeeping museum holding the AVBB documentation centre. The Stichting Bijenpark Amsterdam has managed the sites since 1953.
Citizen participation
The parks hold both ornamental gardens (siertuinen) and beekeepers' gardens (imkertuinen), where amateur beekeepers keep hives on their own plots. There is also a small beekeeping museum (Imkermuseum) with the documentation centre of the Amsterdam beekeeping association (AVBB).
Operating model
The first park opened in 1936; since 1953 the parks have been managed by the Stichting Bijenpark Amsterdam (SBA) together with the Amsterdam beekeeping association (Amsterdamse Vereniging tot Bevordering van de Bijenteelt, AVBB). The Nieuwe Bijenpark on Osdorperweg opened in 1965.
