La Ferme du Chant des Cailles

Watermael-Boitsfort, Brussels, Belgium · Operator: ル・シャン・デ・カイユ(市民とプロ生産者による参加型の非営利団体)

Overview

An urban, participatory and ecologically-minded farm in Brussels' Watermael-Boitsfort district, where citizens and professionals farm together, using food to build local connection and protect the environment.

Citizen participation

A participatory project launched after the first residents' meeting in 2012, where professional growers work alongside neighbours and volunteers to tend shared garden plots, run a participatory grocery, keep chickens and host educational activities, outdoor film screenings, talks and festivities.

Operating model

Combines professional vegetable and sheep-dairy production with citizen participation, education and neighbourhood events, relocating part of the local economy through on-site production, processing (e.g. cheese), direct sales and a participatory grocery.

Impact

For over a decade it has supplied the neighbourhood with fresh food, green space and a place to meet and learn, becoming a model of citizen-led urban farming — while also highlighting the urban land tension between farming and social-housing plans.

Land tenure

License / permitInterim use
