Chayamadai Danchi 'Hibikiau Danchi Life' (DIY, lemon cultivation, community gardening)

Sakai, Osaka, Japan · Operator: 大阪府住宅供給公社 団地イノベーショングループ

Overview

At the public-corporation rental complex Chayamadai Danchi in Senboku New Town, Sakai, Osaka, the Osaka Prefectural Housing Supply Corporation runs the 'Hibikiau Danchi Life' regeneration project. In an aging complex with rising vacancies, it revives residents' lives and community through a DIY workshop, library, deli, mobile vegetable sales and lemon cultivation in vacant spaces.

Citizen participation

Residents join furniture-making and upkeep at the 'DIY no Ie' workshop and connect across generations and neighborhoods through lemon cultivation in vacant spaces, the mobile vegetable market 'Chaya Marche' and the prepared-food shop 'Yamawake Kitchen' in this aging public-corporation complex.

Operating model

A regeneration ('danchi innovation') program of the Osaka Prefectural Housing Supply Corporation, combining DIY unit renovation, 'Nicochi' two-into-one conversions and reuse of vacant rooms and spaces, sustained by rents and public-corporation funding in collaboration with residents and local groups.

Impact

A nationally noted model that drew younger residents into an aging public-corporation complex and spawned many resident-led community activities, widely cited as an integrated case of public housing combined with DIY and food-and-farming revitalization.
