Gamoyon Farm (Gamo 4-chome)
Joto, Osaka, Japan · Operator: 一般社団法人がもよんにぎわいプロジェクト(R PLAY/和田欣也)
Overview
Citizen allotments opened in 2019 in Osaka’s Gamoyon (Gamo 4-chome) on lots cleared after typhoon-damaged vacant houses. Run by the Gamoyon revitalisation project, all 29 plots stay full as an everyday farming and neighbour hub.
Citizen participation
Citizen allotments (~¥4,000/month, water included). Tools and water on site; no toilets/parking. Plot-holders swap produce and look after one another; many drop by after work. Hop growing and food-education events link to the wider Gamoyon neighbourhood.
Operating model
The Gamoyon revitalisation project—known for turning vacant nagaya into restaurants—converted a typhoon-cleared vacant lot into allotments as a food-education and community arm of the same place-making model.
Impact
Turns disaster/vacant-house land into farming and, alongside restaurant reuse, anchors the nationally visited ‘Gamoyon model’.
Land tenure
Interim allotment use of private lots after typhoon-damaged vacant houses were cleared
