Overview

Since 2018 in Hommoku, Yokohama: a renovated farmhouse with a garden as a neighbourhood place. A 2025 civic grant improved access and visibility. Garden, kitchen and clubs now host multi-generational community gardening.

Citizen participation

The renovated farmhouse hosts clubs and rentals (including Hommoku community kitchen); the plot grows vegetables year-round and hosts kindergarten digs. Child-led snack times and tea gatherings span generations. Roughly open Mon–Thu and Sat 11:00–16:00.

Operating model

Citizen-run hub upgraded with Yokohama’s Machibushin grant (up to ¥5M) plus DIY/upcycled materials; self-run programs and space rentals sustain operations.

Impact

Meets local needs for a place to gather and grow food, with child-led activity and community kitchen ties that reduce isolation.

Seseragi Community Garden (Machi no Namagomi Ikashi-tai)

A community garden in Hino City, Tokyo, started by citizens who believe 'kitchen waste is a treasure.' It collects and composts the kitchen waste of around 200 households and grows vegetables and flowers pesticide-free as a food-cycle garden. Naomi Shimpo studied its management and governance in detail in her 2021 and 2024 papers.
