Overview

A Chennai rooftop-gardening initiative launched in 2014 whose founder grows 500+ plants on her own roof and has helped 1,500+ people start their own rooftop gardens. It teaches citizens organic growing through consultations, workshops and internships.

Citizen participation

Residents take part in consultations, workshops, awareness campaigns and a 15-day internship to learn from scratch how to turn empty terraces into organic gardens. Trained residents grow vegetables on their own rooftops and pass the practice on to others.

Operating model

A citizen-led initiative led by founder S. Veeralakshmi, sustained through consultations, training and internships, and linked to the wider rooftop-gardening (PatchaiMadi Thottam) movement in the city.

Impact

More than 1,500 people have converted empty terraces into living gardens. Through rooftop gardens it helps cool homes, cut waste and grow food at home, fuelling a city-wide greening momentum.
