Overview
A resident-led, environment-friendly rooftop vegetable garden launched in 2014 by the Xingrong Community Committee in Chengdu. It practises an organic cycle using rainwater irrigation and kitchen-waste compost, with 23 households growing vegetables together.
Citizen participation
Of the community's 50-plus households, 23 take part in growing vegetables on the roof and share the harvest among themselves. Residents decided through discussion to turn the open rooftop into a garden and run its environmental governance themselves.
Operating model
A non-profit model in which the community committee commissioned a civil-society organisation to promote community development and resident-led environmental governance. Irrigation uses only rainwater and fertiliser comes from kitchen-waste compost, keeping external costs low.
Impact
Featured as a case study by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group as an example of resident-led environmental governance and an organic cycle (kitchen waste → compost → vegetables) using urban rooftops.
