Ciudades Verdes urban agriculture programme, Tegucigalpa (Honduras)

Tegucigalpa, Honduras · Operator: 中央郡市役所(AMDC)・農牧省(SAG)・PRONADERS(持続可能な農村都市開発国家プログラム)、技術協力 FAO

Overview

A public programme in Tegucigalpa that turns urban spaces into productive growing areas to strengthen food security. Its core is a demonstration and training centre where people who will manage urban gardens are trained, so that the techniques spread out to school and neighbourhood gardens.

Citizen participation

Residents and school teachers and pupils learn growing techniques at the training centre, which is designed to multiply instructors who can then teach in other districts. The city government has distributed tools and planting supplies worth over 60,000 lempiras to schools to set up teaching gardens.

Operating model

A public programme combining the municipality, national agriculture agencies and FAO technical cooperation, as part of FAO's Green Cities Initiative, which aims for 1,000 participating cities worldwide by 2030.

Impact

Tegucigalpa has been named among ten Latin American cities highlighted for urban agriculture. The city has handed schools the materials for teaching gardens, giving pupils a hands-on way to learn where food comes from.
