Coventry Grows — citywide community growing sites on council land

Overview
Coventry City Council is opening underused council-owned land across the city so residents can create food-growing and wildlife gardens. Piloted as "Coventry Grows" in 2024, the citywide roll-out was announced in March 2026, prioritising neighbourhoods short of green space.
Citizen participation
Resident groups register their interest with the council (CommunityGrowing@coventry.gov.uk) and pick a plot from an online map of available council land to set up food gardens or wildlife gardens. A full-time Community Growing Coordinator provides advice and support. The 2024 pilot involved more than 58 volunteers.
Operating model
The council invests around £100,000 a year to fund the coordinator, the site map and growing support. Small application fees may apply, with waivers possible for low-income groups. The policy and application process were due to be published in spring 2026.
Impact
Councillor Jim O'Boyle said growing food locally or creating nature gardens "helps improve health, supports wildlife and brings people together". The scheme deliberately targets neighbourhoods deprived of green space (Hillfields, Foleshill, Tile Hill). No quantified outcomes published yet.
Land tenure
Council-owned land made available to resident groups on application; a small fee may apply.
