Farm Africa Addis Ababa Urban Agriculture Pilot

A 15-month urban agriculture pilot run in 2022 by Farm Africa with Ethiopia's Ministry of Planning and Development, aiming to improve the incomes, nutrition and food security of 100 low-income households in Addis Ababa.

A pilot training 100 low-income households in urban agriculture techniques such as vertical growing structures that make the most of limited city space. Participants (many of them women) grow vegetables and rear chickens and fish, sharing techniques through demonstration sites and a learning hub.

A time-limited support project implemented by the international NGO Farm Africa in partnership with the Ethiopian government and funded by the Swedish development agency Sida.

Within a year it exceeded its target, with participating households seeing about a 50% increase in income, alongside greater vegetable production, more diverse diets and women's empowerment.

A government-partnered pilot with demonstration sites and a learning hub, with participating households practising on allocated spaces.
