Overview
An urban garden inside the hub that Friends of the Earth Malta established in Floriana. Built as a place where residents and activist groups pool environmental knowledge and skills, it hosts gardening and climate-adaptation workshops in the garden itself, and its Bee Cause Hub lends out honey-harvesting equipment to connect visitors to pollinators.
Citizen participation
Holds monthly community garden sessions alongside repair cafés, swap shops and food-waste reduction activities. In the garden sessions participants share the work of cleaning the space, planting, watering, harvesting, making plant labels and composting spent plants.
Operating model
Run as the hub of an environmental NGO. Part of the fit-out was funded through the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund managed by the Ministry for Finance; the 2022 series of community garden sessions was supported by the UK in Malta – British High Commission Valletta.
Impact
Ran an eight-part community garden session series from September to November 2022 covering resilience gardening, urban design for climate adaptation, seed banking, water conservation, soil conditioning, composting, pollinator-friendly planting and food preservation.
