Leonardo Garden (Leonardo kert), Budapest
Budapest, Hungary · Operator: KÉK – Kortárs Építészeti Központ(現代建築センター)と地域住民
Overview
A flagship model garden of Budapest's community-garden movement led by the Contemporary Architecture Centre (KÉK). An empty building site in District 8 was divided into 95 plots tended together by citizens of all ages. Closed in 2018 when construction began, it helped spread Hungary's community-gardening movement.
Citizen participation
One of the model gardens of the community-garden movement that the Contemporary Architecture Centre (KÉK) has driven since 2010. An empty building site in District 8 was divided into 95 plots tended by young people, families and pensioners growing vegetables, herbs and flowers. It welcomed school groups and hosted public events — film screenings, children's programmes, yoga and live music — before closing in 2018 when the landowner began construction.
Operating model
A non-profit community garden in which the NGO KÉK temporarily used a vacant lot, run through plot fees and volunteers, emphasising education, culture and community alongside growing.
Impact
In post-socialist Hungary it turned a vacant lot into a multigenerational community garden and helped spread KÉK's nationwide community-gardening movement, influencing many later gardens as a model of interim land use and citizen participation.
Land tenure
Operated on a temporarily borrowed empty building site, but was vacated and closed in 2018 when the landowner started construction.
