Overview
GrowNYC has built more than 120 rainwater-harvesting systems, rain gardens and bioswales in community gardens and schools across the city. In combined-sewer New York, these capture and reuse rainwater on site, diverting over a million gallons a year from the sewer system while enabling citizens to grow more food, conserve water and improve water quality.
Citizen participation
A participatory program in which community gardeners, teachers, students and green-space stewards design, install and maintain rain gardens and rainwater systems themselves using how-to guides and videos. Citizens manage food production and stormwater together.
Operating model
The nonprofit GrowNYC installs green infrastructure in community gardens with grants and technical support. An urban watershed-management model that ties the public value of reducing combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to citizen food production and education.
Impact
It extends citizen-run community gardens into distributed green infrastructure for stormwater, curbing over a million gallons of runoff annually. A leading North American example of participatory green infrastructure integrating food production, education and biodiversity with urban watershed management.
