Trädgård på Spåret (Garden on the Track)

Stockholm, Sweden · Operator: Trädgård på Spåret(市民ボランティアによる非営利アソシエーション)

Overview

A mobile community garden on a disused Stockholm railway track, started in 2012 and inspired by Berlin's Prinzessinnengärten and New York's High Line, where citizens farm collectively and create a hub for food and culture.

Citizen participation

Unlike conventional allotments with individual plots, the whole garden is tended collectively in self-organised small working groups. The association meets twice a week, with roughly 10–20 volunteers showing up, and also runs its own café and farmers' market and hosts events such as culture walks, concerts and DJ sets.

Operating model

A non-profit model sustained by volunteer-run collective management combined with income from its organic café and green market, membership and organic-growing courses.

Impact

Widely known as a model of citizens turning an unused urban gap-space into a place of greenery and food, it has become an emblem of Stockholm's community-gardening movement; built in wooden boxes, it can be relocated, exemplifying interim ('meanwhile') urban farming.
