Overview
A campus rooftop farm the University of Hong Kong has run since 2013. Hong Kong imports over 98% of its fresh vegetables, and the farm is framed as a way for city dwellers to reconnect with food production and nature, fostering environmental responsibility through organic and sustainable practice.
Citizen participation
The farm is run as a space where students and staff grow together, with organic farming workshops, community gardening events and knowledge-sharing activities. The Herb Garden is oriented towards wellbeing and mindfulness, and composting systems are built into the operation.
Operating model
The university provides the space and runs the farm as part of its General Education offering, maintaining it as an experiential-learning space open to students and staff. The aim is education and community-building rather than selling produce.
Impact
Starting from the rooftop, "urban edible spaces" have spread across the campus — a podium garden outside the library, the Herb Garden, and the New College farm. Testimonials from participating staff and students are published on the project site.
