Overview

Opened in spring 2022 on a building rooftop in Tokyo's Nihonbashi-Kayabacho, this urban community garden grows about 200 species of edible plants. Run by Heiwa Real Estate with Edible Schoolyard Japan as an 'edible schoolyard' in the city, it hosts food education for the nearby Sakamoto Elementary School and community exchange, and has won green-city awards.

Citizen participation

Children from the nearby Sakamoto Elementary School join edible lessons in the garden, while local residents and company staff use it for exchange, growing and conservation; about 200 species of edible plants are grown.

Operating model

Run as a corporate placemaking/CSR project through a partnership of Heiwa Real Estate, Universal Engei and Edible Schoolyard Japan.

Impact

Created a rooftop hub for garden-based food education in the city centre, winning urban-greening awards as a model linking business, schools and community.
