Overview
A municipal urban garden opened by Vila Nova de Famalicão in northern Portugal on Avenida dos Descobrimentos along the Pelhe river. It moved to a site roughly twice the size in October 2021 and now lets some 200 plots of 25–100 m² plus 20 raised beds to residents. A course in organic growing is the condition for an allocation, and the site also has a main building, support huts, fruit trees, herb beds and composting areas.
Citizen participation
Residents apply on the municipal form and must complete a free 12-hour course in organic production methods before a plot is assigned; plots then go on a first-come basis. At the October 2021 opening there were 170 users and 70 on the waiting list, and 180 users as of March 2026. Young people with special needs work on site through a municipal employment scheme.
Operating model
A municipally run garden: the city provides the land, the buildings and the training. Grass clippings and tree prunings are composted on site and returned as fertiliser.
Impact
180 people were working plots as of March 2026, and the mayor frames the site as a tool for active ageing, mental health and social inclusion. Yields per unit area and the saving on users' food bills are not published.
Land tenure
The city licenses the use of plots on municipal land. Term and renewal conditions are set by the municipality's general rules, whose text could not be verified.
