Santropol Roulant Rooftop Garden (Montreal)

A Montreal non-profit founded in 1995 to connect youth and seniors, linking a rooftop garden, composting and bicycle-based meal delivery. It is described as the only Meals-on-Wheels service in Canada that grows its own food.

Volunteers from youth to seniors take part in rooftop growing and harvesting, composting, and preparing and delivering Meals-on-Wheels. It creates a space where citizens across generations build relationships through food.

Non-profit. Part of the rooftop harvest goes to the kitchen for the meal-delivery programme, while kitchen scraps are composted by worms in the basement and returned to the roof, forming a closed loop. It is funded by grants, donations, memberships and earned revenue.

Delivers meals to people living with a loss of autonomy five days a week, 52 weeks a year, while fostering intergenerational community. It is known as a North American model integrating rooftop growing, composting and meal delivery in a closed loop.

Operates on the rooftop of the organisation's own building (111 Roy Est) as a permanent ongoing programme.
