Overview
Created in 2013 by the NGO Cultiva Ciudad as a citizen initiative on the ~1,650 sqm site of a demolished, earthquake-damaged housing tower, Huerto Tlatelolco is one of Mexico City's largest community urban gardens. It hosts 120+ plant varieties and runs a community composting program with 40 local families, functioning as a hub for agroecological education and citizen participation.
Citizen participation
A community composting program involving 40 local families is at its core: residents bring organic waste and in return may harvest produce from the garden. Citizens participate broadly through volunteering, school visits and workshops.
Operating model
Run by the non-profit Cultiva Ciudad. It is sustained through workshops, sales of seeds and produce, school programs, and community participation and donations rather than for-profit operation.
Impact
Reclaimed a derelict urban lot into a productive green space. Its composting program processes ~700 kg of organic waste per month, producing compost. It mitigates the urban heat-island effect, supports local biodiversity (dozens of insect and bird species), and delivers environmental education for children and adults.
