Overview
Incheon's 'Eeum' (meaning 'connection') community urban farm, started in 2021 through participatory budgeting. Citizens and organisations grow crops together and run education and exchange activities, creating a public space for safe food and neighbourly ties.
Citizen participation
Citizens and organisations grow crops together and take part in joint projects, education programs, experiential activities and small-group gatherings. Participants identify so strongly with the place that they call themselves 'Eeum village residents', making it more like an urban village than a simple community garden.
Operating model
A public program launched in 2021 through resident participatory budgeting. The Incheon Agricultural Technology Center and the Incheon Urban Agriculture Network provide annual education, seed/seedling distribution and garden-installation support, operating it in partnership with citizen groups.
Impact
Beyond fresh produce it has fostered neighbourly relationships and become one of the central urban-agriculture initiatives in Incheon, involving welfare facilities and seniors, with achievements shared at an annual gathering.
