Overview
In Cité Soleil, Port-au-Prince, residents turned over an acre of former rubbish dump into a community garden. Started in 2012 by three local men, it now holds more than 500 brightly painted tyre gardens, plus a flower garden and a moringa nursery, and is described as Haiti's largest urban community garden.
Citizen participation
Run as part of the Sakala youth centre's programme. Local young people learn growing, composting and agroforestry hands-on, and workshops on composting and the community Eco-San toilet are open to the wider Cité Soleil neighbourhood.
Operating model
Operated by the non-profit youth centre; the garden employs ten young adults and trains them to treat gardening as a business. Waste recycling and composting are built into the programme.
Impact
It employs ten young adults who would otherwise have little economic opportunity and works as a living classroom for nutrition, agroecology and agroforestry, and has grown into a 'Moringa the Miracle Tree' planting campaign.
