Overview
A citizen urban farm in land-scarce Kampala, Uganda, where young people grow food in sack gardens across three city sites, harvesting around 500 kg a month and helping feed local schools.
Citizen participation
A youth-led project growing tomatoes, amaranth and eggplant in space-saving sacks and recycled materials. Part of the harvest goes to nearby schools, supporting two school lunches a week for hundreds of pupils, and the initiative nurtures young people as champions of change.
Operating model
A community enterprise built on low-cost sack and vertical growing in cheap grain sacks and recycled materials, combining food supply, income generation and school-meal support.
Impact
It shows that food can be produced even in tight urban spaces, improving children's nutrition and supporting youth livelihoods and agency, and exemplifies the spread of sack gardening among the urban poor.
