Overview
Kawasaki maintains an Urban Agriculture Promotion Center and develops varied farm-contact venues — citizen farms, instructor-led experience farms, community-exchange farms and pick-your-own farms. Through programmes like Asao green tourism it uses surviving urban farmland as a place of exchange and learning.
Citizen participation
Residents can rent plots at citizen farms to farm freely, and experience cultivation under farmer guidance at instructor-led experience farms run by JA and others. In Asao Ward's 'Asao Green Tourism', farm contact extends to pick-your-own farms as well.
Operating model
A public urban-agriculture policy overseen by the Urban Agriculture Promotion Center of Kawasaki's economic affairs bureau. The city develops citizen, experience and community-exchange farms and recruits users, operating in cooperation with JA Ceresa Kawasaki and others.
Impact
Within a designated city, combines varied farm schemes and JA cooperation to balance farmland conservation with resident exchange, harnessing urban agriculture for community development.
