Overview
Setagaya provides a range of official ways for residents to engage with urban farming: Family Allotments (~10 sqm fully equipped plots), harvest and planting experiences at Fureai farms, a JA farmers market for 'Setagaya-sodachi' produce, and a map of about 110 farm stands.
Citizen participation
Residents rent plots at Family Allotments to grow vegetables and, at Fureai farms, harvest vegetables and fruit or make flower arrangements as family activities. Locally grown 'Setagaya-sodachi' produce is sold at JA farmers markets, creating a local-food venue.
Operating model
A public farm and direct-sales scheme run/supported by Setagaya Ward to conserve farmland and deepen understanding of urban agriculture, funded by user fees and JA cooperative direct sales, offering residents chances to engage with farming.
