Overview
An organic city farm on council land just a few kilometres from downtown, linking welfare, education and organic cycling to give citizens hands-on contact with farming and food.
Citizen participation
An Auckland city farm started in 1981 to teach city dwellers organic growing. For twenty years it also served as a therapeutic space for mental-health and disability clients, and volunteers and locals still tend the gardens, animals and compost.
Operating model
A non-profit model in which a trust runs the council-owned land, supported by workshops and events, produce sales and the local composting service 'Soil Factory'.
Impact
Supports participation, health and connection for a wide range of residents including welfare clients, and contributes environmentally through local food-scrap cycling (Soil Factory).
