Overview
Community gardens in the Grünewald quarter of Luxembourg City's Kirchberg district. After temporary vegetable plots proved popular, Fonds Kirchberg developed more permanent gardens. Cultivation follows ecological criteria — no pesticides, chemical fertilisers or genetically modified organisms.
Citizen participation
Individual plots in the community gardens are reserved for residents of the quarter so they can garden without a car and meet their neighbours. The collaborative gardens are also open to people working in Kirchberg and are tended collectively rather than divided into personal plots.
Operating model
The land is laid out by Fonds Kirchberg, the public body responsible for developing the district, and run by the local non-profit Quartierstuff Grünewald asbl. The collaborative gardens near the Auchan store are maintained by the Belgian company Skyfarms, with costs covered by Auchan.
Impact
Gives residents of Kirchberg — a district developed largely as an office quarter — a place to grow food within walking distance and a point of contact with their neighbours.
