The City of Luxembourg's five community gardens, open to residents of each neighbourhood

Five neighbourhood gardens the City of Luxembourg opened one by one, starting with Bonnevoie-Kaltreis in 2013 and ending with Grund in 2018. Residents manage each one, and all of them are restricted to organic growing — no pesticides, chemical fertilisers or GMOs. They are designed as gardens for the people of a given neighbourhood, and several sit in the dense valley quarters of the old city (Grund, Pfaffenthal, the Pétrusse valley) where houses have no gardens of their own.

Plots are reserved for people who live in the neighbourhood where the garden is. Residents run the gardens themselves; the city provides training in ecological gardening through the year and specialist supervision during a garden's first year of operation. Each garden has its own contact address, with the city's environmental officer overseeing them all.

The city supplies the land and the initial support in each neighbourhood; resident groups do the running, unpaid. Pesticides, chemical fertilisers and GMOs are barred at every site, so growing organically is a condition of taking part.

They give city-centre residents without a garden somewhere to grow, and function as a public service that builds relationships at neighbourhood scale. Because the city pairs each garden with training and a year of specialist support, people with no experience can start.
