Overview
Inaugurated in 2007 as the first urban community garden in the Santiago metropolitan area by the municipality of La Pintana; with a 700 m² parcelled garden and pioneering composting, it sustains agricultural traditions in a low-income commune.
Citizen participation
Local residents grow vegetables in parcelled garden plots; growers' associations and neighbourhood groups run the gardens, sharing knowledge through working groups on irrigation, soil and nutrition.
Operating model
A public program supported by the municipal Environmental Management Directorate (DIGA); established in 1995, DIGA also handles organic waste collection and composting, linking gardens to the local organic cycle.
Impact
It pioneered community gardens in the metropolitan area, hosted the 2014 National Meeting of Urban Gardens and Agriculture, and is recognized as a local model for composting and the organic cycle.
