Overview
Medellín's urban agriculture program. The 2005 'Ecohuertas Urbanas' is its flagship project, and together with the successor 'Huertas con Vos' it advances food security and social cohesion.
Citizen participation
Families and neighbours grow healthy food in urban and rural gardens; a citizen-led growers' network shares knowledge such as composting, practising 'clean agriculture' with natural organic inputs.
Operating model
A public program run by the city's environment department, improving household food security through seeds, seedlings and training; participating families save roughly COP 70,000 per month.
Impact
The Ecohuertas program has reached more than 3,000 people and consolidated around 1,700 urban and rural gardens, contributing to healthier diets, household savings and stronger social ties.
