Ljubljana municipal allotment gardens (vrtički)

Ljubljana's municipally run allotment scheme. The city offers about 1,100 plots across several organised garden areas, leased to residents at EUR 0.70–1.00 per m² per year. Three 'learning gardens' provide free year-round instruction in ecological gardening, so the scheme hands over not just a plot but the practice that goes with it.

Residents rent a plot in one of the city's organised allotment areas on an annual basis. The city runs three 'learning gardens' (učni vrtovi) — at Rakova Jelša, Vojkova and Grba — offering free year-round training in ecological gardening. The areas include Dravlje, Štepanjsko naselje, Ježica, Rakova jelša, Vojkova, Iga Grudna, Grba, Vižmarje–Brod and Muste.

Plots are charged by area at rates set by the city: EUR 1.00/m²/year in areas with individual sheds and EUR 0.70/m²/year elsewhere, plus a proportional share of operating and maintenance costs. The scheme is administered by the Rural Development Section of the Department for Environmental Protection.

An operating model in which the municipality does more than hand out plots: learning gardens and free courses steer tenants towards ecological practice. The scale (about 1,100 plots) and the simple per-square-metre pricing make it a useful reference point when designing an allotment scheme.
