Losæter Urban Farm

Oslo, Norway · Operator: ロースエーテル(オスロ市・ビョルヴィカ地区の文化機関)/市民ボランティア

Overview

A public urban farm in Oslo's Bjørvika redevelopment that links urban farming, art and community — an ancient-grain field, gardens, a public bakehouse and allotments on a former container port, growing food and green space in the heart of the city.

Citizen participation

Begun in 2011 as an art project, Losæter created an ancient-grain field, vegetable gardens and a public bakehouse on former port land in the redeveloping Bjørvika district. Residents grow vegetables in the 'Herligheten' allotments and take part in courses, events and communal work, in a place that links art with urban food production and community-building.

Operating model

Run as a public cultural institution on public land, combining allotments, education and art programming, sustained by public support, grants and volunteer participation as a non-commercial initiative.

Impact

A pioneering example of securing citizen-involved food production and green public space in the middle of dense urban redevelopment. By fusing art and urban farming, it has drawn attention as a model of participatory urban agriculture in Norway.

Land tenure

License / permit

Sited on public land in the Bjørvika redevelopment and run on a lasting basis as a cultural institution with the city's involvement.
