Marunouchi Honey Project (Rooftop Urban Beekeeping)

Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan · Operator: 三菱地所株式会社/一般社団法人エコッツェリア協会(丸の内ハニープロジェクト実行委員会)

Overview

An urban-beekeeping project by Mitsubishi Estate and the Ecozzeria Association on rooftops in the Otemachi-Marunouchi district. Area workers join beekeeping, honey harvesting and forage planting, with the honey circulating back into the district — a worker-participation model of rooftop food/biodiversity town-making.

Citizen participation

Workers in the Otemachi-Marunouchi-Yurakucho (Daimaruyu) district take part in rooftop beekeeping and honey harvesting, often before work. Through bee-friendly planting and honey-harvest experiences they learn about biodiversity; the honey supplies local restaurants and hotels, is sold at markets and turned into products with local firms. Children's harvest sessions are also held.

Operating model

Run by Mitsubishi Estate and the Ecozzeria Association as part of nature-positive, biodiversity-conscious town-making and community building; the honey also circulates into local business.

Impact

Transforms central-business-district rooftops into venues for biodiversity and food experience; in its 10th year it now feeds pollen-DNA analysis back into district greening, building worker awareness and community.
