Overview
Montreal's municipal community garden programme, launched in 1975 and the largest in Canada, rated among the best in North America. About 10,000 gardeners grow food and flowers on 6,700 plots across 73 gardens.
Citizen participation
Residents rent plots in gardens managed by the city and boroughs at low cost to grow vegetables and flowers for their own use. Each garden has a members' committee that sets rules and organises shared work.
Operating model
Municipally run. Begun in 1975 by the former City of Montreal's beautification office, it is a public programme where the city provides land, water and infrastructure and charges low plot fees. Uniform operating policies were established in 1985.
Impact
For decades it has provided affordable growing space, supporting neighbourhood interaction, food education and the social participation of older residents. It is regarded as a public-policy model combining urban green space with community building.
