Overview
A citizen-run neighbourhood farm — the last in central Zurich — operated collectively by some 600 member households, combining growing, animal husbandry, nature conservation, youth and social work to link farming and city life.
Citizen participation
Since 1997, residents of the Riesbach, Hottingen and Witikon districts have worked together to care for ponies, sheep, chickens and rabbits and to grow vegetables, fruit, berries and herbs. About 600 member households, organised into working groups, run the farm ecologically and sustainably and host events from cider festivals to repair cafés.
Operating model
A public, sociocultural project in which a non-profit membership association runs a city-owned former farm with volunteers, supported by membership fees, events, direct sales and vegetable production by the Pura Verdura cooperative.
Impact
Preserves farming life, biodiversity and cross-generational meeting space within the city, and stands as a leading Swiss model of citizens self-managing a publicly-owned farm over the long term.
Land tenure
The farm is owned by the City of Zurich and run by a residents' membership association under an operating arrangement.
