Overview
Rosario's urban agriculture initiative emerged as a community response to Argentina's 2001 economic crisis. The city has won international awards for its vast urban agriculture programs spanning about 45 hectares (30 hectares of community orchard parks and 15 hectares of family gardens). Despite past success, El Bosque now faces challenges from lack of state support.
Citizen participation
Over 700 farming families involved, originally responding to Argentina's 2001 economic crisis. El Bosque currently has about 10 active family gardens. Community members grow food for household consumption and local fair-trade social economy markets.
Operating model
Social economy model. Farmers sell directly at 1,550 social economy fairs annually in public walkways and squares under fair-trade principles. Integrated job creation and food security approach.
Impact
Hundreds of families achieved food security and economic participation. Demonstrated scalability of urban agriculture during economic crisis. However, declining state support has reduced participation, indicating vulnerability to policy changes.
