Overview

In response to food insecurity during the 1990s economic crisis, Rosario launched a municipal urban agriculture program. It expanded from 20 groups to 800+ within two years, supporting 40,000 people.

Citizen participation

Municipal program launched during economic crisis. Started with 20 gardening groups, expanded to 800+ community gardens producing food for 40,000 people within 2 years. Supported by IDRC and UN-HABITAT.

Operating model

Community-led with municipal support. Solidarity economy practice.

Impact

Won the Dubai Award for Best Practices 2004 (1 of 10 winners from 680 submissions). Internationally recognized as a citizen-driven food security model.
