Overview
An urban and peri-urban agriculture programme launched in 2020 by the City of San Salvador and FAO in response to deepening urban food insecurity during COVID-19. Demonstration centres placed across the city act as places to see and learn, and from there the programme spreads know-how on family gardens, growing vegetables in small spaces and composting.
Citizen participation
The centres are run by city staff and volunteer residents with technical guidance from FAO. Vulnerable households and pupils in the municipal school-garden programme take part through a training course on establishing family gardens and urban agriculture demonstration centres.
Operating model
A public programme funded by the city with FAO technical cooperation. It is tied to the city's "San Salvador Limpio" cleanliness strategy: recycled containers are used as planters and household organic waste is composted back into the beds.
Impact
In its first phase 250 households were trained in home food production, while municipal staff and young volunteers were built up as the local technical base. It is framed as a concrete urban response to chronic child undernutrition (13.6% among under-fives) and to the 600,000 Salvadorans unable to meet their food needs.
