Overview
In Nangang's Jiuzhuang, residents transformed a neglected, dumping-prone plaza into a community garden. It is the subject of an academic case study (Sustainability journal) on how community gardens support urban health and well-being.
Citizen participation
Residents identified the underused Dianzikou Plaza as the place most in need of improvement and, through participatory observation and focus groups, jointly turned it into a garden that became a hub for community health and connection during the pandemic.
Operating model
A resident-led non-profit operation supported by the Garden City program, framed around the Satoyama Initiative and run as social infrastructure.
Impact
During COVID-19 it advanced place-based and physical/mental health, and has been internationally cited as a pathway for improving urban health through interventions in city space.
Land tenure
Residents use a public plaza on an interim basis under city permission.
