União Geral das Cooperativas (UGC) and Maputo's Green Zones (Zonas Verdes)

A network of peri-urban farming cooperatives in the outskirts of Maputo, which grew out of the Gabinete das Zonas Verdes set up in April 1980 to address food shortages and land-tenure problems after independence. The União Geral das Cooperativas was formed in 1982–83 and by 1987 covered 181 member organisations with over 10,000 members. It is an early, large-scale case of a citizens' organisation — overwhelmingly of women — coming to supply a capital city with fresh food.

Most participants were poor women who previously had neither land nor employment; by 1987 about 95% of the members were women. Organising as cooperatives gave them access to land together with income and a voice in the cooperatives' own decision-making.

The UGC supplied member cooperatives with seed, fertiliser and equipment, and marketed their produce collectively. Production centred on vegetables, alongside pigs and chickens. After land-law changes in 1991, individual holdings became possible in addition to collective ownership.

By around 2000 it had become the main supplier of vegetables and chickens to the capital. The record emphasises that women who had held neither land nor jobs gained economic independence and experience of running a democratic organisation. Its present-day scale could not be verified.
