UMass Boston Community Garden

Boston, United States · Operator: UMass Boston Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability(協働:Green City Growers)

Overview

A community garden for students and staff that began in summer 2026 on a triangular plot behind University Hall at UMass Boston. Eight raised beds grow tomatoes, lettuce, squash, rosemary, peppers and amethyst basil. The university calls 2026 its pilot year for the project.

Citizen participation

Tended by student and staff volunteers; student sustainability assistants take part in weekly meetings and help run the garden.

Operating model

Run by the university's Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability in collaboration with the urban-farming firm Green City Growers. Four of the eight raised beds were funded by Grow Boston, the City of Boston's urban farming programme. The harvest is distributed through the campus food pantry U-ACCESS rather than sold.

Impact

Sustainability planner Janna Cohen-Rosenthal: "This is our pilot year for the project, and we're already seeing a lot of enthusiasm for it." Produce goes to the campus community through the U-ACCESS food pantry, combining campus food support with hands-on learning about sustainable agriculture.
